The Value of Wet Sand
Wet sand offers children a rich sensory and emotional experience that differs from dry san
Children often use wet sand when they need:
* Greater sensory input
* Emotional release
* Building, moulding or shaping experiences
* Containment and control
* Physical expression of strong feelings
Wet sand can be grounding and regulating for children experiencing anxiety, overwhelm or trauma responses. The tactile nature of wet sand allows children to press, mould, bury, shape and transform their worlds physically and emotionally.
Some children may move between dry and wet sand depending on their emotional state and developmental needs.
Sand Tray and Therapeutic Theory
Sand work within play therapy is supported by several therapeutic approaches and developmental theories.
Jungian and Symbolic Theory
Sand tray therapy has roots in Jungian psychology, where symbols and imagery are understood as expressions of the unconscious mind. Through symbolic play, children may process experiences beyond verbal awareness.
Dora Kalff and Sandplay Therapy
Dora Kalff developed Sandplay Therapy using Jungian principles alongside Eastern philosophy and child development theory. She described the sand tray as a “free and protected space” where healing and integration can occur naturally.
Kalff believed that when children are provided with emotional safety, symbolic expression and a trusting therapeutic relationship, the psyche naturally moves toward healing and balance.
Barbara Turner and The Process of Sandplay
Barbara Turner expanded understanding of sandplay through her focus on the therapeutic process, symbolism and the relationship between therapist and client.
Turner emphasised that sandplay is not simply about the finished tray, but about the entire process:
* The sensory experience of touching and moving the sand
* The child’s selection of symbols and figures
* The pacing and rhythm of play
* The emotional atmosphere created within the therapeutic relationship
She explored how symbols often emerge from deeper unconscious processes and can support emotional integration, healing and transformation over time.
Barbara Turner also highlighted the importance of the therapist remaining attuned, present and respectful of the child’s symbolic communication rather than rushing to interpret or analyse it.
Attachment Theory
Sand work can support children in developing safety, trust and emotional regulation. The predictable sensory experience of sand and the attuned presence of the therapist help create secure relational experiences.
Neuroscience and Sensory Regulation
Current neuroscience highlights the importance of sensory experiences in emotional regulation. Touch and sensory play can support nervous system regulation, helping children move from states of overwhelm into calmer, more connected states.
Child-Centred Play Therapy
From a child-centred perspective, sand allows children to lead their own process. The therapist follows the child’s symbolic communication with empathy, acceptance and curiosity rather than directing or interpreting the play.
A Safe and Creative Therapeutic Space
In the therapy room, sand offers children:
* Freedom without pressure
* Expression without needing words
* Creativity without judgement
* Exploration within safety
Each tray is unique. Each world created in the sand reflects something meaningful to the child who creates it.
Sometimes the process is playful. Sometimes it is deeply emotional. Sometimes healing occurs quietly through repetition, sensory experience and symbolic expression.
The sand tray becomes a place where children can safely explore feelings, relationships, experiences and possibilities for change.
The Therapeutic Power of Play
Play is a child’s natural language , and sand is one of the most powerful tools within that language.
Through sensory exploration, symbolism and relationship, sand work can support:
* Emotional expression
* Trauma processing
* Self-esteem and confidence
* Regulation and calming
* Problem solving
* Creativity and resilience
* Healing through play
In the safety of the therapeutic relationship, children are given space to express themselves fully, authentically and at their own pace.
